General Questions

What is mediation?

Mediation is a confidential and voluntary process in which an impartial mediator helps participants communicate more effectively, explore possible solutions, and work towards mutually acceptable agreements.

Who is mediation suitable for?

Mediation can help with many different types of disputes, including family matters, workplace conflict, neighbour disagreements, commercial issues, and international or cross-border situations.

Is mediation confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is one of the core principles of mediation, subject to any legal or safeguarding exceptions that may apply.

Is mediation voluntary?

Yes. Mediation works best when participants choose to engage in the process willingly and in good faith.

The Mediation Process

What happens during the first consultation?

The initial consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your situation, explain how mediation works, answer your questions, and determine whether mediation is appropriate for your circumstances.

How many sessions are usually needed?

Every situation is different. Some disputes can be resolved in a single session, while more complex matters may require several meetings.

Can mediation take place online?

Yes. Most mediations can be conducted securely online, allowing participants to join from different locations. Where appropriate and by mutual agreement, face-to-face mediation may also be arranged.

What happens if we reach an agreement?

If participants reach an agreement, it can be recorded in writing. Depending on the circumstances and applicable laws, participants may wish to seek independent legal advice about any next steps.
